Yahtzee or Dice Poker is a popular dice game of chance, the aim of which is to score the most points. The game exists both independently and as an additional (simplified) element for computer role-playing games. The wide distribution of Yahtzee is due to its simplicity, accessibility and variability. History of the game
The game was created completely by accident. According to known data, one young Canadian couple had fun on a yacht on the high seas. They had dice with them, which they used for various games. However, when they got bored with all the famous games, they decided to come up with their own. Having written down the basic rules, the couple began to test their new “brainchild”. The process fascinated them so much that they played the rest of the rest exclusively in Yahtzee.
When the vacation came to an end, the enterprising couple came to the conclusion that since they liked the game so much, it might well be of interest to other people who love board games. Without thinking twice, they offered the well-known businessman Edwin Lowe to organize its production and release to the market. Lowe, who has an excellent "entrepreneurial flair", immediately agreed to the offer and acquired the copyright for the game. According to some sources, he paid 1,000 Canadian dollars for it, according to others, he got the game in exchange for 1,000 gift game sets.
One way or another, in 1956 Lowe's firm launched the first batch of Yahtzee on the market. Later, the rights to it were resold several more times. Currently, the exclusive copyright belongs to Hasbro.
As the game's popularity grew, in addition to the classic desktop version, a computer version and a simplified version were released, implemented in larger projects.
Now this game can be found in casino poker rooms, stationary and online stores. It can be played online or by downloading the application to your smartphone or tablet.
Interesting facts
- This is not to say that the game was invented by Canadian newlyweds from scratch. It is believed that the general concept was borrowed by the developers from the famous game called Yacht, which has its roots in at least 1938. Although Yahtzee is similar to Yacht in both name and content, there are fundamental differences between them.
- Hasboro sells 50 million Yahtzee games each year.
- In different countries, the game is called differently and has its own characteristics. For example, to the Germans it is known as Kniffell and Tali, and in the territory of the former Yugoslavia it is known as Yamb.
- A simplified version of Yahtzee can be found in the role-playing computer game The Witcher and The Witcher 2.
- Before, it was possible to play exclusively in the company. The optimal number of players was considered to be 4. However, thanks to the development of computer technology, it is now possible to play even alone.
